Ekurhuleni appoints 75 independent power producers to boost electricity supply
The City of Ekurhuleni says the appointment forms part of efforts to reduce reliance on Eskom and improve long-term electricity stability across the metro.
The City of Ekurhuleni has appointed 75 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as part of plans to strengthen electricity supply and reduce dependence on Eskom.
According to a statement released by the City, Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza officially welcomed the service providers during an event at the Birchwood Conference Centre.

Speaking at the event, Xhakaza called on the newly appointed IPPs to move quickly in implementing the City’s energy plans.
The initiative forms part of the metro’s broader strategy to secure alternative energy sources and improve the reliability of electricity supply for residents and businesses.
The City stated that the agreements include multi-year contracts aimed at supporting long-term sustainability and strengthening energy security across Ekurhuleni.
Municipal officials described the development as an important step following years of discussions around energy diversification and infrastructure resilience.
