The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation South Africa, through its Gauteng Mutual Love Volunteer Group , hosted a winter relief distribution at the forecourt of the Primrose Police Station on July 19.

The foundation planned to reach 2000 families. They reached 1 848 vulnerable households.

The foundation provided essential supplies to families in need. The event brought together approximately 150 participants, including international and local volunteers, corporate partners, youth groups, and law enforcement officials.

The relief packages distributed included 10kg bags of rice, food parcels containing basic staples such as sugar, salt, beans, and mixed grain meal, as well as clothing, shoes, ear warmers, and snacks for families.

The foundation said the event’s success was rooted in months of careful planning and groundwork.

Volunteers conducted home visits to identify families in need, issued distribution vouchers, and coordinated logistics to ensure a smooth and dignified process.

Close collaboration with local police and EMPD ensured safety and order throughout the day.

Among the dignitaries present was Liao Wen-Che, Representative of the Taipei liaison office in South Africa.

He expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the initiative, including volunteers, donors, and local law enforcement.

Deputy executive director Emily Lu reminded attendees that the initiative represented more than just material aid.

“Each item carries the blessings of compassionate people from around the world. Encouraging recipients to continue spreading kindness in their own communities,” said Lu.

In line with Tzu Chi’s philosophy of giving, recipients were also introduced to the Bamboo Bank initiative, encouraging small acts of generosity.

Despite their circumstances, many contributed willingly, raising R835.90, a powerful testament to the spirit of gratitude and the “Cycle of Love.”

Ward councillor Wendy Morgan said she is grateful that the most vulnerable in her ward will receive support.

“The donation will go a long way for these families. The foundation has been continuously supporting the Primrose community, and we are thankful for that,” said Morgan.
