Tensions remained high outside the Germiston SAPS station after dozens of protesters gathered following a door-to-door operation in the Dukathole informal settlement targeting people they suspected of being undocumented migrants.

The group moved through the settlement, detaining individuals they alleged were in South Africa illegally before handing them over to police. As the number of detainees increased, police transported them to the Germiston station.

Officials from the Department of Home Affairs are expected to verify the immigration status of those detained.

Protesters have vowed to remain outside the police station until the verification process is completed, saying they want authorities to ensure that anyone found to be in the country unlawfully is dealt with in accordance with the law.

Group leader Thato Bhengu alleged that undocumented migrants are often released after being detained and accused some police officers of accepting bribes.

“We want to make sure that Home Affairs verifies the individuals we have identified as foreign nationals. Those without legal documentation must be arrested and dealt with by the law,” Bhengu said.
