Author Mandy Ivey brings Tunnel Vision book events to Gauteng

Mandy Ivey is hosting events in Gauteng this month to introduce her book, Tunnel Vision – Seeing Changes the Game.

This is the remarkable story of her journey with congenital glaucoma, which resulted in tunnel vision and significant visual challenges.

Mandy was born with congenital glaucoma and from the age of one underwent numerous eye operations, living with dangerously high eye pressure that often required emergency surgery and caused severe headaches.

Despite these challenges, Mandy pursued her dream of becoming a Springbok gymnast.

Refusing to let her circumstances define her future, she went on to earn provincial colours and compete at the South African Gymnastics Championships.

Her determination captured the attention of the media, and she became widely known as “the blind gymnast”, with her story featured in the Springs Advertiser, other newspapers across South Africa, and later on national television.

On August 7, 1982, at a Christian coffee bar held at the White House in Selection Park, Springs, Mandy experienced a remarkable healing while being prayed for. Many young people witnessed what took place that evening.

Since that day, she has never experienced another episode of high eye pressure, has never required another eye operation, and now has peripheral vision.

Co-authored by Mandy and her husband, Mike, Tunnel Vision is far more than the story of a miraculous healing.

It is a memoir that explores Mandy’s childhood journey, the life changing events surrounding her healing and the unexpected challenges that followed.

Having learnt to navigate the world with limited vision, Mandy suddenly had to unlearn everything she knew and relearn how to see, move and engage with the world in an entirely new way.

This proved to be a far greater adjustment than she, her teachers and those around her had ever imagined.

Blending honest storytelling with practical life lessons, Tunnel Vision explores the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual forms of tunnel vision that can affect us all.
