Big fights for big men

Fight fans can look forward to a feast of fights at Emperors Palace on August 31.

Boxing trainer Harold Volbrecht probably has the best talent in the country as far as the heavyweight division is concerned.

Two of those big fighters, Ilunga Makabu and Junior Muller, will be in action on August 31, at Emperors Palace.

Makabu, who has recently moved to Ekurhuleni, will be headlining the bill, which is called Triple Thunder.

He will be defending his WBC silver cruiserweight title against Eric Fields.

Makabu, who is also known as Junior, recently won the title when he beat Dmytro Kucher in Monte Carlo.

The exciting southpaw put on a great performance on the island in the south of France when he handed Kucher his first career loss.

He will be looking to keep his winning streak alive against Fields, who has set up a training camp in Canada.

Fields boasts a good record, with his only defeat being at the hands of top contender Ola Afolabi.

The GCN visited Volbrecht’s gym and got to see Makabu and Muller spar.

The two boxers showed good form in training.

Muller will face Tshepang Mohale for the South African light heavyweight belt.

This will be a rematch of their 2011 scrap for the same title.

Mohale took the belt by a technical knockout the last time around.

Muller, however, has looked a much tougher fighter since then.

He has had two entertaining fights with Ryno Liebenberg, who will also be in action that night.

Muller, known affectionately as “The Hurricane”, will look to reclaim his belt.

Liebenberg will face Gabriel Ramirez for the WBC silver international light heavyweight title.

That night will also see former IBF and IBO strawweight champion Nkosinathi Joyi take on Benezer Alolod for the WBC international junior flyweight title.
