Charity Mile fever

It is almost time for the Charity Mile.

The Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile is just around the corner and excitement is building among local celebrities and top South African trainers, as well as the Peermont Children’s Trust charities that have been selected to participate in the day’s festivities.

The annual event takes place on November 2, at the Turffontein Racecourse, in Alberton, and is synonymous with South Africa’s most famous faces, as each runner in the feature race is associated with both a charity and a local celebrity.

Although organisers are keeping mum on the selection of famous faces for the 2013 race meeting, last year’s event hosted none other than Her Serene Highness, Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Phumelela sales executive Clyde Basel says HSH has a long association with horse racing and, along with the Racing Association, also announced that the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Starling Stakes will again be featured on the racing itinerary.

In addition, the programme will include the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Maiden Mile and the HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco Maiden Sprint.

The two maiden races that have been programmed are specifically for horses that have not won a race in their racing careers.

The princess’s generosity will enable lesser performing race horses to be acknowledged for their efforts.

The nomination fee upon entry for these two races and the proceeds will be split equally between the Highveld Horse Care Unit and the National Thoroughbred Trust.

The day itself offers something for the entire family, with live entertainment, a celebratory autograph signing session, a beer garden and a children’s carnival
