The Tebbutt Mixed Martial Arts Academy had a good start to the year, with quite a number of new young players joining the club.
The other fascinating factor for the club is that they recently completed a first aid course.
“I am proud of both the senior and junior members who participated in this two-day course and it gives me great pleasure to say that all of them worked hard, made it and received their well-deserved certificates,” said the owner and head instructor of the club, Alex Tebbutt.
Tebbutt told the GCN that it was crucial for the club members to undergo the course, because they will be able to help each other or anybody else during tournaments or practise, and on a daily basis.
“The junior members surprised me, as they completed the same course as the seniors, and they did it well,” said Tebbutt.
The youngest girl to complete the course is Hannah Wedel (13) and the youngest boy is Logan Stadler (12).
The participants of the course completed a level one first aid course, facilitated by Emergency Medical First Aid Training (EMFT).
The instructor was Johan Stadler, a sub-contractor for EMFT.
“It was wonderful; they were all committed and eager to learn, which made the whole process much easier,” said Stadler.
“Anybody can complete the course, it doesn’t matter who you are, if you are willing to save a life and are not afraid of blood then it is possible, and I am more than willing to facilitate the course for you.”
In other news, the club has a number of tournaments and competitions lined up for the year.
Members will attend the Eastern Gauteng Trials in March, and the South African Championships in July, among other events.
New interventions are the self-defence and tae-bo classes at the club in Lambton.
These classes run every Saturday, with the self-defence from 6am to 7am, followed by the tae-bo, from 7am to 8am.
Giving back to the community is one of the main goals of the year, so the club has started collecting non-perishable foods, toiletries and clothes to donate it to the Avril Elizabeth Home and other homes.
The increase in the number of new members has resulted in a practise time reshuffle.
The beginners and junior classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6pm to 8pm, with the senior classes taking place every Monday and Wednesday, from 6pm to 8pm.
