The Germiston Golf Club recently hosted more than 120 entrants at their 2014 Club Championships.
The 36-hole competition, played on March 15 and 16, almost didn’t happen due to heavy rains saturating the course.
However, thanks to the sheer will and determination of the on-course staff, headed by golf director Darren Millington, not only was the course ready for play, but the field was rewarded with two days of uninterrupted sunshine.
With players ranging in age from 14 to 75, “‘The Gem”‘ (as the Germiston Golf Club is affectionately known) again proved why golf is a game that can be enjoyed by one and all.
Newly crowned club champion Tony Coyle won with an amazing score of 144 (level par) for two rounds.
Nicolene Cambanis, GGC’s women’s club captain, walked away as the women’s club champion, while the senior club champion title went to local businessman AndrĂ© Hugo, from Andre’s Panel and Paint.
“Events such as these would not be possible without generous sponsors, so we would like to thank our main sponsor, Mercury Plastics, as well as Mcubed Services for their support,” said Germiston Golf Club captain James Johnston.
Festivities continued well after the prize-giving on the Sunday, as members and their families tucked into a superb buffet and enjoyed sundowners, with great music and a jumping castle for children.
