Instilling a love of reading

Authors donate books to local school.

Germiston businesswoman and author Carlyle Labuschagne helped to extend the magic of books to a Germiston school, recently.

She and fellow author, Michelle Horst, arrived at Laerskool Elspark laden with books to help grow the school library.

Carlyle was inspired to include the school in her Help Build a Library in South Africa project, after being approached by a teacher from the school on behalf of pupil Samantha Lewis, who hopes to one day become a published writer.

Samantha was keen to make contact with Carlyle after the young author and mother of two launched a writing mentorship programme at Avalon School, in Ruimsig, earlier this year.

Carlyle was unable to include Samantha in the programme because she is not an Avalon pupil, but offered to publish Samantha’s writing on her own blog – https://www.carlylelabuschagne.com/personal-blog.html

When Carlyle and Michelle arrived at Laerskool Elspark, to hand over the 40 young adult books they had collected, the school’s media prefects were on hand to meet the authors and help to unpack the novels.

“The library had many older titles,” said Carlyle.

“I hope that the donated books, which are more current, will draw the attention of the children and help inspire these youngsters to read more – a cause about which I am so passionate.”

Two books in the Broken series have been published by Carlyle: The Broken Destiny and Evanescent, which was released only a few months ago.

Michelle is the author of The Tainted Ink Series.

  •  How can you help?

Donations of books will be greatly appreciated by Laerskool Elspark.

The school does not have eBook reading facilities, so only good quality second-hand or new paperbacks aimed at young adults or children are suitable.
