Players make progress at club

Monthly tournament success.

The Ekurhuleni Tennis School of Excellence held one of their monthly junior tournaments at the Germiston Stadium, on March 15.

The juniors played only singles, and the boys played with the girls, as this helps them to get out of their comfort zones and gives them a bit of a challenge.

“These monthly tournaments improve the skills of the players and, another thing I like about the children, is that they look forward to these tournaments and treat them like any other competition,” said head coach of the club Loyiso Matsha.

“Their enthusiasm enables us, as their coaches, to judge their performances.”

Matsha has already spotted some of the strengths of the players.

“Dian Dreyer excelled at the tournament,” he said.

“This youngster has been playing tennis for a year and his standard has improved tremendously; he has the ability to go all the way to higher levels.

“All our players show increasing growth and I am happy with their performances and high morale.”

The results of the tournament are:

  • Dian Dreyer -22 points.
  • Tadiwanashe Chipfakacha -14 points.
  • Martinique Davids -13 points.
  • Jennah Davids – 4 points.
  • Jaydan Rooskrantz – 8 points.
  • Sethembile Myeni – 8 points.

In other news, the club will host a tennis clinic at the Germiston Stadium, on March 31 and April 1.

Beginners and intermediate players, aged seven to 14, are welcome, and the fee for both days is R100 a player.

To round off the clinic, a mini tournament will be played and prizes are up for grabs.

To secure a position at the clinic contact Matsha before or on March 30.

Skills and techniques players can expect to learn and enjoy, at both the clinic and the club, are tennis etiquette and good tennis manners; control points of all the basic strokes; physical training; technical and tactical training; rules of tennis; water intake and recommended nutrition; tennis general knowledge.

The club is always open to new players; there is a registration fee and the players use their own racquets.
