Local athlete conquers Championships

Local athlete represents Gauteng.

Christelle Grobler, a Grade Six pupil at Laerskool Oosterkruin, took part in the South African National Primary Schools Athletics Championships, on March 19-22, in Paarl, in the Cape.

Grobler, u-12, represented Gauteng Province in shot put and discus, where she won the u-12 shot put event when she threw 11.40m and was crowned as the South African National Champion.

She also took part in the discus event, where she made the podium in second position, with a distance of 31.55m, and was awarded a silver medal.

Her shot put distance of 11.40m broke the record of 11.17m that she threw on March 2, at the Gauteng Championships.

What made the SA Championships special for Grobler is that she came fourth in discus, at the Gauteng Championships, but second at the SAs, showing growth, development and improvement in her performance.

The youngster received 934 Athletics Performance Evaluation (APE) points for discus and 924 APE performance points for shot put.

The APE points she received for her individual performances, together with her teammates’ performances, contributed to Gauteng being ranked the number one team for 2014 after the overall points were calculated.

Overall points standing:

  • Gauteng Province, 138 949 points
  • Western Cape Province, 138 542 points
  • Free State Province, 95 214 points
  • North West Province, 75 942 points
