Local lads beat tough opposition

Great win for Germiston City Football Club.

A hard-fought ELFA Super League Cup game saw Germiston City FC (of Super League Seniors Division Two) claim victory by 2-1 over Bedfordview (of Super League Seniors Division One), last weekend.

Germiston started strongly and nearly had the ball in the net in the first minute, but narrowly missed.

In the 17th minute, Germiston did find the back of the net, only for the referee to overrule his linesman and declare the goal offside.

Bedfordview gathered themselves and started to pose some problems for the Germiston defence, but the scores were level at halftime.

In the second half, Bedfordview started with new found energy and scored a well-taken goal in the fourth minute.

Some excellent saves by the Germiston goalkeeper, Brandon Greyling, kept his side in the game and City were rewarded in the 15th minute, with a lovely headed goal from a corner by Dembi Mayimele.

Thereafter, it was all about the team from the lower league, with some great football being played to keep Bedfordview at bay.

In the 27th minute, Germiston broke through with a beautiful pass from the midfield, with Tshepo Maiketso beating the diving Bedfordview keeper in the bottom left-hand corner.

Although they were 1-2 down, Bedfordview tried to make a comeback, but a resilient Germiston team fought to the end for a well-deserved victory.

The Germiston City reserve side were not so lucky.

After being drawn against Sporting in a cup game, the Germiston side came away with a creditable 2-1 defeat.

Sporting scored the winning goal with less than two minutes left on the clock in extra time, after Simpiwe Hlatswayo had put Germiston ahead in the first half.
