Athlete makes Callies proud

Podium position for Germiston Callies athlete.

Germiston Callies were represented by Zwelithini Vaphi at the 2014 Newton Karoo Ultra-marathon, in Laingsburg, on October 4.

Vaphi said the race was challenging but he managed to pull through it.

“The race was very tough, we were running against a slight wind,” he said.

The local athlete made podium in the third position overall.

“It was not easy to finish third overall and as the first veteran finisher, but I am very proud of myself and happy about my achievement in the race,” said Vaphi.

“The support during the race was very good; people were encouraging us.”

Vaphi is also grateful to the people who made his attendance at the race possible.

“Thanks to Victor Mhlakaza, a club committee member, who drove down to Laingsburg with me, and another big thank you to the club for everything they did to make it possible for me to go and take part in the Newton Karoo Ultra-marathon, I really appreciate the support,” he added.
