Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the first league of the 2014/2015 track and field season, at Hoërskool Goudrif, recently.
Top and upcoming athletes met on the fields as they did their best to qualify for the SA Athletics Championships, next year, and the Inter-Provincial Athletics Championships, later this year.
To qualify for selection for the SA championships, athletes need to participate in at least four meetings and the Central Gauteng Athletics Championships, as per the programme, which is filled with back-to-back track and field events.
“Considering that it was the first event of the season and a new venue, a huge turnout was not anticipated, however, family and friends came to support athletes and participants made appearances for their events on time,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.
Having experienced a setback on availability of traditional stadiums, the Track and Field Commission ensured that this will not get in the way of proceeding with the Track and Field Calendar.
Hoërskool Goudrif’s track stadium hosted the first meeting of the season.
Even though the track was a grass surface, athletes managed to adapt and do exceptionally well in their designated events.
“These young athletes figured it is never too early to start participating with the aim of making it into the Central Gauteng team that will participate in the inter-provincial and South African championships,” said Ngema.
Ngema added that the early start will allow the athletes more time to improve throughout the season and better their chances.
Track and field serves as one of the major talent identification platforms and encourages the development of athletes at a young age.
The javelin section was really interesting, as number of athletes performed exceptionally well.
Spectators and coaches stood on the sideline cheering, which seemingly encouraged the athletes to perform to their utmost best.
“I must say, starting with enthusiasm was a wonderful way to start the season,” added Ngema.
