Ekurhuleni set to host triathlon championship

Germiston Lake Park closed for triathlon.

It’s all systems go for the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championships, taking place this Sunday, at the Germiston Lake Park.

“Labelled the highlight race of the 5150 African Triathlon series, the metro is expecting thousands of Ironman fanatics to attend the event for the third year running,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

“Those not participating are invited to attend the spectator-friendly event in the park’s beautifully landscaped garden, which offer family picnic spots and a children’s play area, to ensure each member of the family is entertained during this triathlon experience.

“The course of the race is expected to be flat and fast, with a one-lap 1.5km swim in the crisp waters of the Victoria Lake, a 40km bike course on the N17 and a flat, fast two-lap run.

“This lucrative race for international and South African athletes offers a R120 000 prize purse.”

Community members who use the Germiston Lake Park should take note that the facility has been closed for public use and will reopen on November 3.

Road closures will also be implemented to make way for the smooth running of the race.
