Blow-by-blow action for young boxers
Local boxers represented the Primrose Open Boxing Academy at the Bert Collins Boxing tournament.
Three young boxers from Primrose Open Boxing Academy competed at the Bert Collins Boxing tournament, last Saturday.
The tournament was held at the Bert Collins Boxing Club, in Springs.
Duncan Botha (10), Nikita Filbin (14) and Robin Rosenkrantz (17) were the local youngsters representing the club at the tournament.
Filbin went against her Brakpan opponent, Shirees du Plooy in their 50kg school age division bout.
Filbin proved to be stronger than du Plooy when the three-round bout ended due to a referee stoppage one minute and 20 seconds into the first round.
“She once again performed very well and it was well rewarded,” said the club’s chairman and head coach, Louwrens Ellis.
“Rosenkrantz took to the ring for the 46kg youth division bout against Jaqueline Fryer from our neighbouring club, Elsburg Wrestling Club.
“The three-round bout went the distance and Rosenkrantz lost on points.”
Ellis said the youngster performed well even though she lost.
“This was Rosenkrantz’s first bout and she was fighting against Fryer who has more experience,” he said.
“Rosenkrantz did well and with more training she can achieve big things in the sport.”
Botha also fought in a three-round bout that went the full distance.
He fought against Xavier Wyngaard, from Pretoria, in the 38kg division bout.
“It was a tough fight, but he persevered throughout and although he lost on points, I am proud of him,” said Ellis.
“I am proud of all the boxers, they represented our club very well and with more training they will produce great results.”
