Gauteng SAPS National Road Cycling Team took part in SAPS National Road Cycling Championship

Gauteng SAPS National Road Cycling Team took part in a four-day race called SAPS National Road Cycling Championship that took place at Cradle of Human Kind in Krugersdorp.

The race started on June 26 and ended on June 29.

The registration of participants took place on June 25.

About 120 riders and a total of 10 teams participated including all nine South African provinces and one team from the SAPS head office.

Communication official at Vosloorus Police Station Capt Piet Rossouw said it was exciting to compete with the champions from all over the country.

“All riders who took part in the race enjoyed themselves,” said Rossouw.

He said the saddest part on his side was when he had an accident.

“I was hit by an Eskom vehicle on the first day of the race. That accident nearly took me out of the race. I bled because I sustained a serious injury,” Rossouw said.

He said the injury he sustained did not stop him from finishing all the six races he was supposed to take part in.

“During the opening day on Monday, we had two races followed by one race per day on Tuesday and Wednesday. On the last day (Thursday) we had two races,” Rossouw said.

After the final race on the last day on Thursday afternoon, the prize giving ceremony took place. The prizes were given to the best performing team and individuals for their outstanding performances.

Western Cape Cycling Team became number one while Gauteng SAPS National Road Cycling Team took the fifth position.

Sgt Peter Phala of Gauteng SAPS National Road Cycling Team took most of the individual medals followed by Sgt Quinton Jewatzhwitz for their stunning performances.

They were both selected to represent National Team.
