It’s all about the boxing
Boxing fans reminisce about the good old days at East Rand Veterans Boxing Association’s (ERVBA) 28th birthday celebration.
The East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) was established 28 years ago on August 9, 1989.
The club celebrated its 28th birthday at the Primrose Bowling Club on Thursday.
Club members and boxing fans gathered for the celebration and spoke about all things boxing.
“Our vision should be on amateur boxing clubs,” said the club’s treasurer, Johnny Carbis.
“We need to attend their events and show our support.
“The young ones need motivation. It would be amazing if some of our champions were to attend their training sessions to share their experiences.”
Carbis said they also want to get more youngsters involved in ERVBA.
“We need to get young boxers involved in the club,” said Carbis.
“This is an open club and you don’t have to be a former boxer to join the club.
“It is open to all who love boxing, and this includes the youth.”

Carbis said more attention needs to be paid to amateur boxers.
“I feel a lot of focus is put on professional boxers but we need to pay attention to our young amateur boxers who are our future,” said Carbis.
“We don’t have to neglect professional boxers; we just need to support both.
“Although we are visible to professional boxers, we need to be more visible to amateur boxers and clubs.”
The evening’s guest speaker was IBO junior flyweight champion, Hekkie Budler.
Budler who has 33 fights, 31 wins and two losses behind his name, shared his advice on succeeding as a boxer.
“You have to work and train hard as a boxer because if you don’t, you won’t make it,” said Budler.
“It is important to listen to your coach and trainers and do your road work – always.”
Carbis said they are looking forward to another fruitful 28 years.
“We had a good year and hope to grow from strength to strength,” said Carbis.
“We are already preparing for our Champions and Contenders Night which will be held in October.
“The event is not aimed at people who have a boxing background. Even if you are just a boxing fan, you are welcome to come and join in the fun.”
