Cricket season creeps closer

Germiston City Cricket Club are ready to tackle the new season, which starts in October.

With the Easterns Cricket League, 2017/2018 season creeping ever closer the Germiston City Cricket Club (GCCC) is hard at work preparing.

This season, which starts on the first weekend of October, sees the club aiming to better their amazing 2016/2017 season.

“The senior season starts in the first week of October and this year we intend on entering not only two Saturday League teams but two Sunday League sides as well,” explained GCCC chairman David Ungerer.

In the early 1990’s and 2000’s, the club boasted two Sunday sides and three Saturday sides.

“We want to get the club back to being a formidable contender in the league with the additional Sunday, Saturday and possibly Junior League teams.

“Of course this depends on player interest,” he said.

This is why the club is calling on all interested parties to come and join them for what promises to be another fun-filled season.

“Our two new Sunday League sides have already started practising on Wednesdays nights at an indoor facility close by, but we are always looking for new members,” said Ungerer.

Germiston will play their home matches at the Germiston City Sports Club in Vimy Ridge Road, in Delville, and will practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Ungerer once again encouraged young cricketers to also join the club to help the GCCC achieve their dream of competing in this year’s Junior League, which will also kick-off in October.

“Once again this dream is subject to the community interest,” he said.

The club caters to u-8, u-10, u-12, u-13 and u-17s with practices held at the club’s home grounds on Mondays and Wednesdays.

“With the new committee in charge I believe we will grow the club and return it to its former glory,” said Ungerer happily.
