VLC shine at nationals

Victoria Lake Club sailors lead the way in the 2017 Laser Class National Championships.

The Victoria Lake Club (VLC), based at Germiston Lake is a well-known water sport hotspot in Ekurhuleni.

Once again VLC’s sailing club has produced national champions.

A number of the club’s sailors gave stand-out performances at the 2017 Laser Class National Championships, which were recently held at Aeolians Club on the Vaal Dam.

The championships, which saw favourable weather conditions and good winds throughout the day, comprised an Olympic boat single-handed competition for men and women, as well as a nominated class for the Youth World Sailing Championships.

Brothers Marcello and Stefano Marcia from VLC battled race to race for the title of national champion, but it was Marcello who came out on top after the final regatta. Stefano was placed second overall, while Rudolph Holm from the host club was placed third overall.

The day’s nominated youth class sported the biggest number of entries with a number of competitors travelling from the Western and Eastern Cape.

This division was dominated by the Cape sailors who were more comfortable with the strong wind conditions.

Calvin Gibbs placed first overall with Cullen Keytel and Sarah-Jane Deary rounding off the podium finishes in second and third place, respectively.

The 4.7 class, which is the development group of the nominated youth class – and aims to introduce young sailors to the highest level of competition – saw an outstanding performance by young VLC sailor Keagan Nel, who managed to beat the challenge from Eastern Cape sailor Robyn Hellstrom, and Gauteng sailor Jason Muller.

The club is thrilled with the results and is looking forward to the next competition.
