Local drag racer revs into next round

Malvern East resident and local superbike racer Peter de la Rey celebrates commanding lead in the South African National Drag Racing Championships, heading into the final leg.

Malvern East resident and local superbike racer Peter de la Rey recently travelled to Cape Town for the next leg of the South African National Drag Racing Championships.

“Our racing this season has involved a lot of travel to away tracks with our main track, Tarlton, not hosting any national championship events this year because of escalating costs,” said de la Rey.

De la Rey, who is currently competing in the Superbike Class on a BMW S1000RR, sponsored by Bavarian Motorcycles, has celebrated a great start to the season.

“I have had a rather excellent year so far and have now got a commanding lead in this series with two rounds to go.

“From the outset of the season I have had exceptional pace.

“At sea level these 200bhp monsters are a handful to handle and extremely quick. In Cape Town we were on pole after practice and I felt confident and comfortable,” he explained.

De la Rey won the first round at the championship and was third in the second round.

“We run two rounds in one day to save on travelling costs,” he said.

“I was handicapped and it was huge in the second round but nevertheless, I managed to beat my nearest rivals in the championship and stretched my lead to a commanding position.”

He is now looking forward to the next leg of the championship which will be held in KwaZulu-Natal in November.
