Paddlers prepare for Dusi with tough training race

A large number of paddlers supported the Florida Lake Canoe Club’s recent training race.

Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted a FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon seeding and training race on the Klip River last Sunday.

The race took place from Daleside to Meyerton with 30km of paddling and two 2km portages which sees paddlers run with their boats.

With more than 100 entries in the race, it was the best supported local river race in months as paddlers geared up for the Dusi which takes place in February next year from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Because of heavy storms and rainfall during the past couple of weeks, the water of the river was superbly wild, fast and furious and was thoroughly enjoyed by experienced paddlers.

Jaco Esterhuyse, a member of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) based at Germiston Lake, teamed up with Michael Merry from Emmarentia Dam Canoe Club to participate in the tough training race.

The race was a great way to establish if you are ready for the Dusi challenge.

The pair completed the 30km race with portages in a time of three hours and seven minutes.

They thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
