Fun-filled canoe race offers training and experience

Paddlers offered unique opportunity to prepare for the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon.

The Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon is a two-day marathon held annually in Cradock and covers a total of 81.8km.

The race will be held on October 5 and 6.

To help paddlers, both professional and novice, improve their proficiency and stamina for the race, the Victoria Lake Club (VLC), situated at Germiston Lake, will be hosting a river race on the Klip River.

The race, known as the Cake River Race, is open to K1, K2 and K3 racers and will be held on September 2.

It will start at Ixoxo Manzi, just above Mine Rapid, before paddlers travel 20km down river.

The race will also include a compulsory portage.

The event was organised once again, after first being hosted in 2017, to develop the sport and encourage novices to get experience and qualify early in the season.

“The race aims to provide the canoeing community with an opportunity to get some river experience and for novices to earn points ahead of the Fish,” explained Wayne Saunders, VLC chairperson.

“Acknowledgements and prizes up for grabs for the race are bragging rights and three delicious cakes sponsored by Shailime Baking Solutions.”
