Local coach bags presidential award
The 2018 Ekurhuleni Women in Sport Awards honoured a number of women on the sidelines and those on the track and field in the first award ceremony of its kind.
Head coach of Diamond Athletics Club Maria Diamond was recently awarded the Ekurhuleni Sports Federation Presidential Award at the inaugural Ekurhuleni Women in Sports Awards held in Boksburg.
The awards were presented by Futballing Girls, a non-profit organisation (NPO), in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Sports Confederation.
Diamond, who was also nominated in the Coach of the Year category, has six assistant coaches under her in the club and oversees the athletic careers of over 90 athletes from Germiston and even as far as Springs.
She presented her level three coaching thesis last Saturday following an invitation from Athletics South Africa (ASA) CEO Richard Stander to do so.
She is awaiting her final results.
“Should she pass she’ll be the first-ever woman of colour to receive her National Excellence Advisor in sprints, hurdles and long jump,” said John Diamond, a coach at Diamond Athletics Club.
