Unrelenting karatekas earn new belts

Junior karatekas strike against all odds to earn new belts.

Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy recently held a taxing karate grading in which 33 junior students sought to upgrade from white belts to brown belts.

Grading is held in order for students to showcase their progress and proficiency in karate. It also helps establish seniority.

“We hold our grading to very high standards,” said kanchu Alex Tebbutt.

“We know what each person in our dojo is capable of and we push them to their limits. They are relentless, though, they push back just as hard.

“Grading not only proves their dedication in earning a new belt, but it shows their family and friends what they have worked hard for in the months leading up to the grading itself.”

The key focus areas during the grading were full contact, self-defence and building stamina.

“Stamina helps with the well-being of your body and brain,” said Tebbutt.

“If your stamina is not right, you will go down in any fight.

“We scheduled three-against-one fights to train our students how to handle themselves on the streets.”

Every girl from the dojo was expected to showcase self-defence moves as part of the grading.

Self-defence is a key element for Tebbutt, as every girl and woman needs to learn how to take care of themselves in the society we live in.

“Our grading is not for the faint-hearted. Belts are earned through proven dedication to training in combination with an examination,” said Tebbutt.

“We are proud to say that every one of our students at Tebbutt’s Academy earned their new brown belts on the day.

“We also awarded other coloured belts to other students at the dojo in recognition of their training efforts and to encourage them to continue such endeavours in the future.”
