It’s kick-off time for Marathon’s soccer tournament

Marathon informal settlement’s football clubs battle for the top spot in local tournament.

The Marathon informal settlement’s soccer tournament kicked off last Sunday, at the Marathon sports grounds, with 10 teams eager to make the quarter-finals and ultimately win the tournament in the finals.

In the first game of the tournament, a powerful Arsenal FC faced Black Leopards FC.

Arsenal FC’s goalkeeper Zikalala Bhekisisa let no shots on target find the back of the net when his team faced Black Leopards FC last Sunday, at the Marathon sports grounds.

Arsenal dominated the game from the onset and scored an early goal, which would be the only goal of the match, earning them a spot in the next round of the tournament.

In the second match, spectators saw the tournament’s two favourites go head-to-head.

Mzwandile Ntombela of Tiger Boys FC helped his team defeat Marathon FC in their first match of the tournament, last Sunday, at the Marathon sports grounds, and booked a place in the upcoming quarter-finals.

Marathon FC played against Tiger Boys FC in an enthralling match, which was won 1-0 by Tiger Boys.

The third match saw Heroes FC and Inter Milan FC challenge each other for a spot in the quarter-finals.

With a 3-1 lead, Inter Milan sent Heroes packing and booked a spot in the quarter-finals.

Juventus FC played against Manchester Boys FC in the fourth match of the day.

Manchester booked a spot in the next round with a 5-3 win.

The last match of the day was between Swazi Nation and Celtic FC.

Hlompho Matlebyane will again be in action in the next round of the Marathon informal settlement’s soccer tournament when his team faces Arsenal FC.

Celtic gave an impressive performance and booked a place in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win.

In the next round, the fixtures are as follows:

• Arsenal versus Tiger Boys.

• Inter Milan versus Manchester.

Based on the goals scored in the first round Juventus qualified for the quarter-finals and will face Celtic.
