Athletes run, swim and cycle their way through triathlon

Athletes young and old, from beginners to pros, tested their skills at the Trinity Sports Triathlon, last Sunday.

Though sunshine shone off Germiston Lake last Sunday morning, the water was icy, another obstacle that competitors had to tackle in the Trinity Sport Triathlon and Duathlon.

The race was the first in a three-part series, which will end in April, next year.

The Trinity Sports series offers athletes, from beginners to professionals of all ages, a chance to race and hone their skills.

The event was split into four age divisions, namely young ones (eight to nine years old), children (10 to 11 years old), juniors (12 to 19 years old) and seniors (20 years and older), and has both standard and sprint distances.

The standard triathlon began in the water with a swim of 1.5km with many racers pulling out and being brought to shore by the lifeguards as the cold proved too much for them.

Competitors then hit the streets of Germiston for a 40km cycle route and ended the event with a 10km run.

John Middlewick was the overall winner in a time of two hours, 12 minutes and 35 seconds.

He was closely followed over the finish line by Anton Reyneke, who finished the race in two hours, 14 minutes and 18 seconds, with Jaco Venter rounding off the podium finishes in a time of two hours, 20 minutes and 11 seconds.

Lindy-Lee Folscher came in first for the women in a time of two hours, 27 minutes and 12 seconds.

She was followed by Tracy Nyamuda, who finished the race in two hours, 29 minutes and 18 seconds, and Magdalena Shlesinger, who finished the race in two hours, 30 minutes and 12 seconds.
