Johannesburg bowlers claim victories
On any given day, over 300 bowlers were playing.
Bowlers recently took to the greens in Ekurhuleni when they battled it out to claim the title of the Inter-District Bowling Tournament winners.
This was before the announcement of a national lockdown.
Hosted by Ekurhuleni Bowls, the tournament was played at Edenvale, Modderfontein, Delville Germiston and Alberton bowling clubs. It saw teams from the 20 bowling districts across SA descend on the Ekurhuleni region.
In the men’s category the results were:
• First place (awarded gold medals) – Johannesburg Bowls
• Second place (awarded silver medals) – Bowls Gauteng North
• Third place (awarded bronze medals) – Port Natal and Eastern Province
In the women’s category the results were as follows:
• First place (awarded gold medals) – Johannesburg Bowls
• Second place (awarded silver medals) – Sables (Western Gauteng)
• Third place (awarded bronze medals) – Western Province and Port Natal
Alana Warrender, from Ekurhuleni Bowls and an organiser of the tournament, said the event went well.
She said on any given day there were over 300 bowlers playing.

“Being able to host the tournament shows the confidence Bowls South Africa has in the Ekurhuleni region and its facilities.”
President of Ekurhuleni Bowls Craig Hall believes the tournament went so well because of the organisers.
Although bowls is often perceived as being a sport for the elderly, younger generations are taking it up.
Hall said in Ekurhuleni the number of younger players is increasing.
“Approximately 70 per cent of Ekurhuleni bowlers are 60 years or older, while about four per cent are u-20s.
“We have a strong contingent of middle-aged players, but are pushing to increase the number of younger players.”
