Raptors bring home gold

The wrestlers were Werner van Wyk, Ben Oosthuizen, Devan van Tonder, Jaun Vorster and Anton Strydom.

Primrose Wrestling Club, also known as the Raptors brought home gold and bronze medals from the South African Wrestling National Championships.

They represented the Ekurhuleni Wrestling Association at the competition, held in Stellenbosch recently.

Anton Strydom won bronze in the 32.8kg-36.0kg weight group and defended his title in the U10, (34.4kg-37.8kg) category.

The GCN previously reported that members of the Primrose-based club were elected to compete in the tournament.

The wrestlers were Werner van Wyk, Ben Oosthuizen, Devan van Tonder, Jaun Vorster and Anton Strydom.

The competition was from the highest level, with athletes competing from over South Africa.

The Primrose Wrestling Club won two gold, three bronze and a fifth place.

Jaun Voster won a gold and bronze medal’s at the South Africa Wrestling Championships.

Hannes van Der Merwe represented the club as a referee.

Trudie Oosthuizen, from the club, said the free-style presidents’ schools category was the main event on the first day.

This is a category where only weight is taken into account, with age not being a factor.

This means different-aged wrestlers get to compete against each other.

“Ben Oosthuizen achieved his personal best by ending fifth in this category. Jaun Vorster won bronze in the 29.6kg to 32.3kg weight group. Anton Strydom won bronze in the 32.8kg to 36.0kg weight group,” said Trudie.

“On the second and third days, we had five wrestlers in the freestyle category. This is a category where age and weight are taken into consideration.

Devan van Tonder came third and received a bronze medal in the U13, 38Kg category. He competed at the South African Wrestling National Championships for the first time.

 

“Werner van Wyk (U9) had a tough match in his first round and wrestled like a champion. Unfortunately, he lost the match.

“Anton Strydom won the U10 (34.4kg to 37.8kg) category for the second time in two years,” said Trudie.
Devan van Tonder came third (bronze) in the U13 38kg category.

“It is a great achievement for Devan’s first SAs. Jaun Vorster won the U10, 30.4kg to 33.3kg category,” she said.
