Victoria Lake parkrun celebrates milestone event
The introduction of a parkrun enabled the local community to enjoy a healthy sporting activity at no cost.
Victoria Lake parkrun celebrated its 300th event on March 9 with over 200 participants from across the province.
The Victoria Lake parkrun has continued to grow since its start in July 2016.
Germiston Lake’s park boasts tarred roads and brick walkways, which are ideal surfaces for running or walking, with the main objective of the parkrun being to uplift the community and promote healthy lifestyles.
To commemorate this occasion, the Victoria Lake parkrun joined hands with Germiston SPCA.

Grant Stockdale, a volunteer, said the run is held every Saturday at Germiston Lake, from 08:00, and sees runners and walkers from across the country getting fit.
“This event has enjoyed great support from locals and neighbouring communities over the years and it is still the same,” said Stockdale.
“The community was asked to come with donations of animal food and toys which will be handed over to the animal welfare organisation, the SPCA,” said Stockdale.
“Victoria Lake parkrun is a free event hosted by welcoming volunteers, and dogs are welcome too. Many runners came with their emotional support companions to enjoy the morning’s chilly weather,” said Stockdale.
“The introduction of a parkrun enables the local community to enjoy a healthy sporting activity at no cost.

“The parkrun has grown steadily from its inception with members of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club now using the run as training for major races.
“The level of volunteers stepping up to help has been phenomenal. Every Saturday we host the parkrun at the lake,” said Stockdale.
