Elspark High celebrates 1-0 win against Hoërskool Goudrif

Elspark High School and Hoërskool Goudrif enjoyed a day of hockey when the two schools faced off on May 2.
Goudrif hosted the away team during their Eastern Gauteng Hockey League matches.

The visiting side won by a goal.

Earlier on the day, Goudrif’s U15s and U16s also competed losing 2-0 and drawing 0-0 respectively.

Melanie Germishuizen, the Hoërskool Goudrif hockey organiser, said this year they have three divisions: U15, 16 and first team.

“The girls are gradually improving their skills. We sometimes play against private schools who can afford to bring necessary outside help but despite who we play we bring our A-game.

“We train four times a week from Monday to Thursday. We play in the Eastern Gauteng League, placed in group C.

“We also require support from the community in the form of training kits and other items.

“In addition to fundraising every year to help with some of the costs, this past Friday was our fundraising event. Every cent is used to meet the requirements of the school,” said Germishuizen.

The first team coach Ruan Kruger of Hoërskool Goudrif said that although their performance was strong, they still needed to improve for the upcoming game.

“We are going to keep on training and trying to improve things. Our main challenge this season is that most of our girls come from our lower divisions.

“Our focus will be on ball control. Once we can manage the ball with the sticks, applying other important skills will be a breeze.

“The goal is to build from our strengths. The next game is against strong opponents, Leeuwenhof Akademie, and I always enjoy playing against them because they push you hard and demand that you play your best,” said Kruger.

The first team hockey coach Cleo Pretorius of Elspark High celebrated the victory with her players.

She said that the girls appeared to be having a great time and that it was a fun match.

“We always tell the girls to enjoy themselves while playing. We were able to carry out our strategy and dominate large portions of the game. Every time, we begin the match on defence before moving into an offensive formation.

“We used the triangular angle formation to our advantage and were able to score a goal that we held onto throughout.

“There are five divisions in the school – U14, U15, U16, second and first team. We intend to use the same strategies to win when we play Germiston High School in our upcoming match,” said Pretorius.
