Germiston Detective proudly completes marathon

“This year was an up-run and I struggled with muscle pulls, but halfway through the race, I started to feel more comfortable,” said Mukhesi.

Germiston SAPS detective Sergeant Itani Mukhesi proves dedication and perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements.

Recently completing the 97th Comrades Marathon, Mukhesi finished in 08:32:03, earning the prestigious Bill Rowan Medal awarded to those who finish in under nine hours.

Mukhesi, representing SAPG AC, completed the marathon in 07:37 last year and 08:02 the year before.

In addition to his marathon success, Mukhesi was honoured as the first runner-up for best detective and forensic employee of the year (Level 5) at the 2023 Ekurhuleni SAPS District Excellence Awards.

Mukhesi’s marathon journey began in 2014, participating in events like the Soweto, Sanlam, Cape Town, Two Oceans, and Mandela marathons.

“The Comrades Marathon preparation event is the Two Oceans Marathon. You feel the physical, mental, and emotional strain of both occurrences,” he said.

Representing the Ekurhuleni district at the national level in SAPS contests, Mukhesi has earned several medals.

“My favourite medal this year has to be the Comrades medal. Major General Anna Sithole, the district commissioner for Ekurhuleni, greeted me at the finish line. She was pleased that I represented the district,” Mukhesi said.

“My goal for next year is to win a silver medal.”Mukhesi has dedicated 18 years to the SAPS.

Following his recent accomplishments, colleagues and senior officers honoured him with a celebratory breakfast upon his return to work.

“I am grateful to everyone who joined me in celebrating with a delicious breakfast. My station commander expressed pride in the accomplishment,” Mukhesi said.

Balancing work and running responsibilities, Mukhesi credits a rigorous training programme for his success.

“On the weekends, I trained and ran qualifying events for the Comrades Marathon. The Mandela Marathon, the Absa Run Your City series, and Sanlam Cape Town are my upcoming competitions,” he said.
