Primrose athlete gets ready for OR Tambo-Soncini Social Cohesion Games
“Since starting at the age of four, I qualified for district and provincial levels, and hope to represent my region with pride.”
Primrose resident Calvin Kandira will take on elite provincial athletes at the seventh annual OR Tambo-Soncini Social Cohesion Games held at the University of Johannesburg’s Kingsway Campus.
Kandira, a Grade 9 learner at Hoërskool Goudrif, enters the competition with notable momentum, having recently won the 200m final at the Curro Podium event in Pretoria.
There, he faced stiff competition from athletes like Kwena Mojapelo, who set the U13 200m record at the 2023 SASA Primary Schools Championships in Pietermaritzburg.

“I was delighted to win but also wanted to beat Mojapelo, who came in second,” Kandira said.
Competing in the U15 200m category, Kandira’s journey has been one of persistence.
Until recently, he trained alone and bettered the Egoli record for the 200m in 21.99.
Now with a coach, he is also taking on the 100m and 400m.
“Athletics is everything to me, and I am blessed with strong support from my family,” he shared.
“Since starting at the age of four, I qualified for district and provincial levels, and hope to represent my region with pride.”
Looking ahead, Kandira plans to compete in the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) leagues next year, aiming to make his mark in the athletics scene.
