CGA athlete gets lifetime achievement award
"I want to be remembered as someone who ran his race. I am a normal person who has a dream and is working to achieve it.”
Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) awarded former Edenglen High learner Akani Simbine, Olympic gold medalist from the Paris 2024 Games, with the prestigious presidential lifetime achievement award.
The accolade was presented during a ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre, where Simbine also claimed the senior men athlete of the year award earlier in the day.
The 31-year-old sprinter received the honour from CGA acting president Karabo Mabilo, celebrating a career that has inspired many and brought pride to South African athletics.

Simbine expressed his desire to leave a lasting legacy in South African athletics.
“I’m a dreamer and aim to do more for the sport while still active.
“They say when you leave, ensure things are better than how you found them. I still want to win more medals and reshape how athletics is perceived in the country.”
Reflecting on his journey, Simbine said: “Soccer and art initially drew me but I fell in love with the track, seizing every opportunity that came my way,” he said.
