Athlete breaks own record in Germiston championships
Leandri Holtzhausen (Geel) broke the national record at the CGA Youth to Seniors League’s third meeting.
Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the third Track and Field League of the 2025 season on Saturday at Germiston Stadium.
Despite the rain, the event attracted over 1 000 athletes, all striving to qualify for the national championships.
A highlight of the event was the hammer throw, where Leandri Holtzhausen (Geel) broke her own record with a throw of 66.54m.

She surpassed her previous national record of 66.11m, set at the 2023 Athletics South Africa Grand Prix 2.

In a post-event interview, Holtzhausen expressed her excitement at breaking her record again this season and shared her goal of throwing 70m this year, crediting her off-season training for her progress.
The senior men’s 800m race saw Boikanyo Motlhamme of the University of Johannesburg take first place in 1:57.18. Jason Vermeulen of Kudus finished second in 1:58.40, while Neo Dhudla of Lesedi claimed third in 1:58.48.
The senior women’s 1500m race was equally thrilling, with Mahlatsi Ngwenya of Ubuhle leading from start to finish, winning in 4:03.68. Cacisile Sosibo of Boxer took second in 4:48.31, while Sandra Wijtenburg finished third in 4:51.18.

CGA PR officer Nongcebo Siziba commented on the girls’ U18 3 000m race, saying, “We saw an outstanding competition, with Nicola Smith of Ekhaya dominating from start to finish, clocking 10:31.76 to secure the gold medal.
“Previous league winner Heymans Katelin of 32Gi settled for silver in 10:35.06, while Mapaseka Mongatane of Masai took bronze in 10:55.26.”
