Elsburg Eagles Rugby: Unstoppable in Valke President’s Cup with historic victories

Clinton said the club welcomes new players, especially young children, to join and develop their skills.

The Elsburg Eagles Rugby Club is off to a flying start this season, notching up impressive victories over Heidelberg and Sasolburg rugby clubs in the 2025 Valke Rugby President’s Cup.

These recent wins come on the back of a significant triumph earlier in the year against longtime rivals, Nigel Rugby Club — a victory that had eluded the Eagles for over a decade.

“We celebrated a significant win against Nigel, with the second team winning 26–20 and the first team clinching a 24–21 victory — a feat not seen in a very long time,” said club chairperson Clinton Venter.

“Looking through our records, we can’t even find when we last beat them. The conversations go as far back as the 2011/12 season.”

The club, made up of four divisions — the Black Eagles (first team), Golden Eagles (second team), Bald Eagles (Golden Oldies), and juniors (under-18) — is experiencing renewed momentum across the board.

Currently, the Black Eagles sit fifth on the league table, with the Golden Eagles holding second place.

The Bald Eagles are preparing for the Sangora Nationals in Nelspruit this September, while the junior team’s fixtures kick off in July.

In April, the Bald Eagles successfully hosted the Bald Golden Oldies Festival — a fundraising event to support facility upgrades including greener fields, fence repairs, and transport expenses.

“We’re building on and off the field,” said Venter. “The support from the community helps keep us going, and the fundraiser was a great success.”

The club’s campaign in the Merlin League is also heating up. In their opening fixture against Heidelberg Rugby Club, the second team powered to a 29–7 win, while the first team lost narrowly, 37–33.

“Our second team let a try slip early but bounced back with determination. The first team also had a rough start but fought hard in the second half to close the gap,” Venter explained.

“We’re proud of every player who stepped onto the field — and especially grateful to the supporters who showed up to back their team.”

On May 31, the Eagles battled Sasolburg Rugby Club in a nail-biting contest. The second team edged a 34–33 victory, and the first team emerged triumphant in a thrilling 43–40 win.

The Elsburg Eagles Rugby Club continue their winning streak as the league kicks off.

Standout players included Michael Schloms, Andy Huysamen, and Caltino Jones, who was named man of the match.

The club boasts an impressive résumé, including two back-to-back Merlin League titles and a Kestrel League title.

Looking to the future, Venter encouraged young athletes to join the club.

“If you’re between six and 18 years old and passionate about rugby or just curious to try something new, we welcome you to become part of the Elsburg Eagles Junior Rugby Club. It’s a great way to build skills, teamwork, and confidence.”
