Young athletes shine at Central Gauteng Athletics provincial championships

From rising stars like Kealeboga Sefala to seasoned performers, the CGA provincial champs showcased the depth of talent in the province.

The Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Provincial Championships were buzzing with activity as the provincial body looked to select a strong team ahead of the national championships.

CGA president Steven Khanyile said the organisation is wrapping up its season, which began in May. After the leagues they held, the team was pleased to see athletes perform strongly at the championships.

“We’re hoping to bring a strong team to represent the province in Mpumalanga. With the quality of performances seen today, we’re aiming to be number one, beating our biggest competitors, the AGA,” Khanyile said.

He explained that extensive preparations go into the leagues. CGA has a system that allows clubs to bid to host the leagues, while the cross-country commission oversees the process to ensure smooth provincial operations.

“We are calling for sponsorships to come on board. We’d like to provide prizes for the winners and support our athletes beyond the current level.

“This is where we develop and grow talent, enabling top-tier athletes to emerge from such events,” Khanyile added.

As a province, CGA is proud to see some of its athletes representing South Africa on international stages.

Local club United Stars from Primrose celebrated Kealeboga Sefala, who claimed first position in the girls under-8 1km event. Coach Zakhele Gumede, who had 27 athletes competing, praised Sefala’s resilience.

“She won all six of her leagues prior to the provincial champs. She competed today with an injury and still managed to win her race. Our preparations were good, and this victory shows her dedication and determination,” Gumede said.
