Local athlete shines again at CGA youth meet
Kungawo Madikane, an 11-year-old from Ramaphosa, sealed his third straight U11 1 200m win, showing that hard work and discipline pay off on the track.
Rising star Kungawo Madikane continued his dominance at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Sub Youth Track & Field League 3 on Saturday, winning the U11 1 200m for the third consecutive time to complete a clean sweep of the league series.
The 11-year-old cross-country sensation from Ramaphosa impressed once again, clocking a new personal best of 3 minutes 43 seconds.
“I’m happy I stayed consistent and won the race,” said Madikane. “However, I wanted to run 3:40. I’ve been working hard in training to improve my time.”

A Lakeside Primary School learner and proud member of the Boxer Athletics Club, Kungawo has been a dominant force this season, collecting gold medals in both track and cross-country events.
His coach, Thulani Sibeko, praised the young athlete’s work ethic and determination.
“On August 30, Kungawo won the Provincial Championships at Curro Sagewood in Midrand,” Sibeko said. “These performances earned him selection to the Gauteng team for the National Championships in White River, Mpumalanga, held on October 4.”
Madikane’s season highlights also include victory at the CGA Provincial Championships at Germiston Soccer Stadium on August 16, and qualification for the ASA Cross Country Championships at Kees Taljaard Stadium in Middelburg on September 6.

“Kungawo has shown tremendous talent, but what truly sets him apart is his discipline and humility,” said Sibeko. “Facing Gauteng’s best young runners, he often has to prove himself.”
With an exceptional season behind him, Madikane now looks ahead to competing in the U11 1km race at the Boxer 5km event in Johannesburg.
