Ekurhuleni Golf Union honours Charmaine Stone with Spirit of Golf award
Charmaine Stone was recognised for her exceptional leadership and commitment to women’s golf in Ekurhuleni, receiving the prestigious Spirit of Golf award despite a personal loss earlier this year.
The Ekurhuleni Senior Women’s Golf (ESWG) president, Charmaine Stone, expressed her gratitude after receiving the Spirit of Golf award from the Ekurhuleni Golf Union (EGU).
Although the moment was bittersweet following the recent passing of her husband Rob, to whom she was married for 45 years, Stone said she is deeply thankful for the recognition.
“Receiving this award from the EGU ladies’ president, Lezette Vermaak, means so much to me. I just wish my late husband, Rob, could have been here to share this award with me.

“I know he would have been very proud. He passed away five weeks ago from a massive heart attack. He is missed every moment of every day,” she said.
Under Stone’s leadership, the ESWG has grown steadily and successfully hosted the SA Senior Women’s Championships in 2023.
The organisation also hosts monthly ESWG competitions at various venues around the district.
Together with her team, the Farrarmere resident has grown ESWG membership to around 200 since taking over the organisation’s leadership.
The organisation held its annual Christmas competition and prize-giving at Benoni Country Club (BCC) on November 18, with around 100 ladies in attendance.
“A fantastic end to our golf calendar. It was a well-supported day. Unfortunately, no golf was played due to the rainy weather, but our ladies were dressed in their green and festive colours.

“Thank you to BCC for the amazing lunch, and thanks to everyone who made this day successful. Hosting over 100 ladies at our year-end function was amazing, and I would like to thank every one of these ladies for their continued support,” Stone said.
Meanwhile, the organisation continued its charity outreach at Kuselo Child and Youth Care Services (CYCS) in Boksburg.
“Thank you to all our ladies who generously contributed baby products to be donated to the charity of our choice, Kuselo CYCS Gauteng,” she added.
