World Lead and Record-Breaking moments light up 2026 CGA Track and Field Championships.

Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted the 2026 CGA Track and Field Provincial Championships from March 12 to 14, with two new records set.

One of the defining moments of the championships came in the senior men’s 400m, where South African star Lythe Pillay delivered a sensational run, storming into victory in a remarkable 44.32, setting the world-leading time for 2026 and electrifying the crowd with one of the standout performances of the championships.

The event delivered three days of outstanding athletics competition, record-breaking performances, and thrilling racing across the multiple age categories.

The championships began on March 12 at Germiston Stadium, before moving to UJ Athletics Stadium for days two and three, where the majority of the track and field programme took place.

This year’s championships attracted over 1400 athletes from across the province, with some top athletes from our neighbouring countries, which added an exciting global element and raised the competitive standard of the championships.

Day one kicked off with a showcase and endurance running at its best, where the senior men’s and women’s 10 000m races took centre stage.

Athletes battled through the gruelling 25-lap event in a test of strategy, stamina, and determination. Cacisile Sosibo emerged victorious, continuing her impressive performance in the 10 000m. Sosibo has established herself as one of the province’s top distance female athletes.

“We concluded the championships on a high note with the senior men’s 100m final. South African sprint star Cheswill Johnson delivered a commanding performance to be crowned CGA champion,” said CGA PR and communications coordinator Nongcebo Siziba.

“Johnson had already shown his speed earlier in the rounds when he stormed to victory in his heat in a blistering 10.07. He returned to the track in the final to secure the title in 10.24, closing the championships in style and thrilling the crowd gathered at the stadium.
