Organisation to host drug awareness campaign

"The entrance fee to the hall is only R10. That money will include breakfast and lunch," said Nxumalo.

Hlokomelang Batho, a non-profit association based in Katlehong, will host a drug awareness campaign at DH William Hall on Tuesday, November 29.

The campaign will run from 9am until 2pm.

According to the director, Sonny-boy Nxumalo, they have identified that their community is falling apart due to alcohol, drugs, lack of facilities, lack of information, child abuse, abuse of women and abuse of the elderly and the disabled because of unemployment and lack of programmes for ex-convicts.

“Our aim is to bring about change in our community. The only way we can do that is to bring people together and address the above-mentioned issues.

“To address the issue of drugs and alcohol, we have invited people who work with addicts and recovering addicts to come and address those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol.

“National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will be there to empower the unemployed youth with some skills and give them advice as to how to start their own business. Tshepo 5 000 will also be registering young people in their database and taking CVs so that the youth can find employment. There will be companies assisting the youth with learnerships, scholarships and bursaries,” said Nxumalo.

In order to address the issue of abuse of women, children and elderly people, Nxumalo said People Opposed to Women Abuse (POWA) will be working hand in hand with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to empower women, children and the elderly people with skills to fight abuse.

“As for bully ex-convicts, the organisation run by ex-convicts known as Power of the Game Changers will be helping ex-convicts, giving them life skills.

“The people who run the organisation were once convicted for various offences but they have managed to turn their lives around and become successful in life. They will be there with the aim of sharing life-changing tips with the ex-convicts,” said Nxumalo.

Nxumalo pleaded with the community of Katlehong, whether they are affected by the above-mentioned issues or not, to join them on the day.

“The entrance fee to the hall is only R10. That money will include breakfast and lunch,” said Nxumalo.
