Celebrating OR Tambo in theatre

Written and directed by Zwelibanzi Sibiya, the manager of the Germiston Theatre, Light at the End of the Tunnel celebrated the life of OR Tambo.

Written and directed by Zwelibanzi Sibiya, Light at the end of the tunnel, a theatre production depicting the life of OR Tambo, premiered and showed at the Germiston Theatre in the last week of October, and it attracted many theatre enthusiasts.

Local theatre directors Gareth Lovell Davies and Ashleigh Kroll (Stardust Theatre Productions), skilful theatre producer Mbongeni Ngema, who is best known for his work on the South African theatrical classic Sarafina!, as well as Naledi Awards adjudicators were spotted among the audience during the different performances.

Lerato Mvelase, a seasoned local actress, was the charismatic curator of Light at the end of the tunnel, a theatre production based on OR Tambo’s life.

Zwelibanzi was ecstatic to have attracted the likes of Mbongeni to the theatre and said he hoped the culture of theatre and performance art would again grow in Germiston, during his lifetime.

Lerato Mvelase, who currently stars in Isibaya, was the curator of the production.

She fittingly took on the role of narrating the woes, joys and death of Tambo.

The life and times of OR Tambo were depicted in a thrilling theatre production entitled Light at the end of the tunnel, written and directed by Zwelibanzi Sibiya.

The show was also tied to the worthy cause of collecting sanitary pads for underprivileged girls in the metro, as well as educating learners from local schools about the rich history of Tambo by taking them on a field trip to the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct in Wattville, Benoni, where the struggle icon is buried.

Though the curtain call last Sunday marked the last showing of Light at the end of the tunnel, Tambo’s life and legacy will continue to be celebrated.
