Beware of scammers this silly season

Please be extremely vigilant during 'silly season' as scammers are out on the prowl for their own 'Christmas bonuses'.

On November 19, an African gentleman approached my elderly father while working in his garage.

The gentleman explained he was an employee from one of the cellphone service providers and was enquiring if my folks were interested in connecting fibre to their home.

The ’employee’ explained the fibre connection would cost R600 per month but pensioners would be charged a special monthly rate of R300.

My father was then requested to complete a form (with company logo and contact details) and was furthermore requested to enter his banking details and PIN on the employee’s cellphone.

You may immediately think to yourself that you would never do such a thing, but to a 77-year-old man suffering from hydrocephalus (water on the brain), this situation did not send off any alarm bells.

This was obviously the work of a scammer trying his luck to make a quick buck, but luckily my father had blocked his own account as he could not remember his PIN and we could reset and change his details before any damage was done.

Please be extremely vigilant during ‘silly season’ as scammers are out on the prowl for their own ‘Christmas bonuses’.
