Stingrays take on Easterns and excel

Jones said the team, which excelled, ranged from 10-year-olds to university-aged students.

Despite the challenges of 2020, Edenvale Stingrays took to the water at the end of last year when they competed in the Eastern Gauteng Championships.

The championships, held between December 9 and 13, saw the swimmers take to the figurative and literal plunge under new circumstances.

Coach for the Stingrays, Kate Jones, said at the event no parents or spectators were allowed to support, no team relays were permitted and everyone had to obey Covid-19 regulations.

“I was incredibly proud of how well the swimmers handled this year’s championships,” said Jones.

“Every single swimmer dropped times and qualified for level 2, 3 or SA National Juniors.”

Jones said the team, which excelled, ranged from 10-year-olds to university-aged students.

“We were grateful to have had our championships and hope to compete again in January in the hopes of the team members qualifying for nationals and Olympic trials,” said Jones.
