Cathy (81) and Ernie (86) toast to 60 wedded years

“Grandpa had one wish and that was to be in the newspaper for their wedding anniversary.”

January 7 marked 60 years of love and care for Cathy (81) and Ernie (86) Coleridge, who celebrated their milestone wedding anniversary.

According to their granddaughter, Meaghan Kitley, “Grandpa had one wish and that was to be in the newspaper for their wedding anniversary.

“They moved to Kempton Park about 20 years ago in order to be close to their two children and grandchildren,” Kitley stated.

In 1961, this couple got hitched in the West Rand, shortly before moving to Welkom in the Free State.

Ernie was an electrical foreman at Western Holdings GM Welkom and Cathy worked as a bookkeeper.

“Granny says grandpa’s dark hair and looks attracted her to him. They went on one date and the rest is history.

“To them, communication, patience and respect are very important elements to foster in a relationship.”

Kitley said both her grandparents have been active bowlers for many years and that their achievements in this arena are endless.

“Both have their provincial colours and have been playing at Kempton Park Bowling Club for many years after moving from the Free State to be closer to family. Together, they’ve raised and nurtured five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

“We are so thankful to still have them around.”
