Fana prepares for paralympics

Fana Mbote (14) qualified for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan and spends most of his time preparing for the big event.

Local sports hero and Jameson Park resident Puseletso ‘Fana’ Mbote (14) qualified for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan and spends most of his time preparing for the big event.

The young blade runner lost his right leg in a car accident in 2010 on his fifth birthday, but this did not stop him from achieving his dreams to become a successful athlete.

Fana qualified for the 2020 Paralympics when he won gold in both the 100m and 200m events at the National Championships for the Physically Disabled (NCPD) which took place in Stellenbosch in March this year.

“I am very excited to participate in the Paralympics. I want to make my community and everyone who has ever supported me proud. My aim is to break the 100m Paralympic record and I want to bring a gold medal back home,” Fana explained.

He will also be participating all over the world over the next couple of months in preparation for the Paralympics in August next year.

He will be heading to the African Championships in Morocco in January, thereafter he will be on his way to Thailand to participate in the 2020 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS).

”I can’t wait to represent South Africa at these events, especially the 2020 Paralympics. I want to prove to myself and everyone that you can do anything you put your mind to. Consistency and dedication is key to every aspect in life,” he concluded.

Through the help of HERAUT, a member of the community paid for Fana’s flight to the NCPD earlier this year. However, the trip to Tokyo will cost far more than what his flight to Cape Town did.
