Soccer teaches children life skills – coach Modipa

“Playing soccer teaches children life skills, such as hard work, decision-making, problem-solving and communication.

“They learn about teamwork, it gives them good exercise and keeps them off the streets,” said Bafana Modipa, coach and team manager of City Stars u-13 to u-17 teams.

The u-15 City Stars lost against Young Generation on August 21 with 2 goals to 1.

“Although we practise hard, it’s not always about winning,” Modipa said and added he encouraged children to enjoy the game while he taught them techniques.

Modipa, who was a keen soccer player in his school days, also played for the Lucky Rovers in Balfour.

Modipa coaches soccer every Saturday at the soccer field in Ratanda Extension 23 and invites anyone interested to join.

His teams are participating in the Top 4 Tournament that started on August 28.

Modipa, a single parent to two boys, said soccer brings communities together and through healthy competition, teaches children the importance of teamwork and cooperation, as well as good sportsmanship.

Modipa is looking for a local sponsor for his team as the former sponsor, Heidelberg Mica, has closed due to the untimely death of owner Paul Jansen van Vuuren on June 18 due to Covid-19 complications.

If anyone wants to join or is willing to sponsor his teams, they can contact Modipa on 076 806 0305.
