Couple traumatised after attempted hi-jacking in Ferryvale

NIGEL - A couple from Barnsley Road (Ferryvale) is left traumatised after an attempted hi-jacking which occurred on May 4.

The incident occurred around 07:00 as the couple was about to leave for work.

According to police spokesperson W/O Madeleine von Wielligh, an African male appeared at the driver’s side and pointed a firearm at the driver, while another two armed men appeared on the passenger’s side. The female passenger managed to press the panic button, but the suspects told her husband to cancel the panic call.

The suspects then removed the woman’s jewelry and took the man’s wallet and the car keys. The driver however, refused to get out and also told his wife to stay put, as the men wanted to take their car. Hindered by the couple’s refusal to leave the car and the sounded panic alarm, the suspects fled the scene.

A neighbour’s CCTV footage later revealed that the suspect drove off in a silver Mercedes Benz, but the registration number plate was not visible.

A case of armed robbery is being investigated.

Police warned residents to be vigilant at all times and to immediately report suspect vehicles or people in their area.
