SAPS Heidelberg police spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate said the arrests were made around 15:00 on October 11 in Kirti Street, Shalimar Ridge by the Ekurhuleni K9 unit from Benoni.
“Police responded to a tip-off received from members of the Shalimar Ridge community, which brought them to a flat in Kirti Street from where the suspects were selling Nyaope. After a thorough search of the property, police discovered around 100 pieces of Nyaope on a table that was covered with a blanket,” Capt Tshilate said.
A single piece of Nyaope is being sold on the streets at an estimated price of R50-00 each. According to Capt Tshilate, the street value of the confiscated pieces roughly amounts to R5 000.
During the arrest, one of the suspects (a 38-year-old Nigerian) offered police officers a bribe of R3 700 in exchange for his freedom. A second charge (bribery) was therefore added.
SAPS Heidelberg acting station commander Lt Col Tryphina Nyaka commended the community for reporting illegal activities, which ultimately resulted in the successful arrest of the suspects.
She also encouraged members of the local community to continue reporting criminal activities to the Police in the fight against crime and assured that all information provided by the public will be treated as confidential.
The suspects are expected to appear in Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court soon.
