The City of Ekurhuleni has intensified its efforts to increase economic participation by the traditionally marginalised sectors of society through a community empowerment programme called Mintirho ya Vulavula, which means actions speak louder than words.

The City will conduct regional roadshows on the Mintirho ya Vulavula community empowerment programme from tomorrow, 27 November to 5 December to assist business entities and coorporatives owned by designated previously disadvantaged groups.  This is to assist them to be economically competitive and able to participate in the mainstream economy.

The roadshows are to educate and provide the community and the local business fraternity with valuable information. This will be with regard to the application processes for inclusion in the sub-contracting processes for the City’s preferential procurement programmes.

The Mintirho ya Vulavula programme is part of the City’s 10-Point Economic Plan, which among its key focus, is support of small and medium enterprises.

The programme is also a measure to achieve the legislative requirement that organs of state should apply preferential procurement system in designated economic sectors to promote designated previously disadvantaged groups.

Therefore, the City has invited members of the community who fall under the designated groups for purpose of gaining prospective contractors preference points for contracting bidding processes.

 

The targeted enterprises and coorporatives for the roadshows are those that are at least 51% owned by:

  • black people
  • black people who are youth
  • black women
  • black people living with disabilities
  • black people living in rural or underdeveloped areas or townships
  • co-operative which is at least 51% owned by black people
  • black people who are military veterans
